The NNPN home office would like to give a warm welcome to our newest staff member, Michele Farrington, BSN, RN. Michele is a Staff Nurse on the Inpatient Pediatric Unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She is joining the NNPN staff as a program assistant and will be focusing on developing the new staff nurse section, among many other important NNPN tasks! Welcome Michele!
After many months of discussion, we have formed a new NNPN Workgroup, the Staff Nurse Workgroup, to join our other four: Education, Networking, Community Based Partnership, and Implementation. This group will be headed by Michele Farrington, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Sheila Sullivan, Central Arkansas VAMC, and Theresa Heindlemeyer, St. Mary's Health Care. This workgroup will focus on designing and running the Staff Nurse page on our website. The staff nurse section will be created for ease of use for busy staff nurses. We welcome any and all staff nurses who would like to volunteer their ideas or join the workgroup! To volunteer for this workgroup or to offer ideas, please contact Michele at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
On May 20th & 21st, the NNPN Steering Committee came together for two days in Iowa City. The purpose was to refocus our goals and future direction of the NNPN, as well as welcome and orient our three newest steering committee members. The meeting went exceptionally well and the group left feeling energized and focused.
We are continuing to hold monthly sessions on different topics led by "experts" who also belong to the NNPN. Because not all members can attend the live sessions, we record and post the sessions for viewing at your convenience.
Our upcoming session, to be held Tuesday, 12 Central time, July 7th, will be presented by Terry Bravata and Sue Rice from Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. They will discuss Mission Nursing and how it can enhance the professional development of nurses.
Latest Recordings currently available:
April 7: Jean Cody and Karen Coppin from Southwestern Vermont Medical Center discuss the nursing drivers for and educational innovations in developing a successful Evidence-Based Practice Day, as well as describe the outcomes and significance of evidence-based practice day they held at their hospital. May 5: Dr. Leah Shever from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics discusses using data to inform quality improvement and guide evidence-based initiatives with the end objectives of your being able to interpret statistical control charts and able to describe approaches to address common and special cause variation.
June 2: Michaelene Kinser from VA Durham discusses the overall needs assessment and planning process involved in a hospital-community based conference. She defines the conference outcomes, pros, cons and future plans for stimulating an evidenced-based nursing culture.
Our first ever On-Line Interactive Journal Club will be held July 23rd at 3:00 PM Eastern, (2 pm Central time). Dr. Marita Titler, NNPN Executive Director, has volunteered to lead this initial session. The article for this session is: Johnson, D., Lineweaver, L., and Maze, L. (2009). Patient's Bath Basins as Potential Sources of Infection: A Multicenter Sampling Study. American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Vol. 18, No. 1.
Participation for each session will be limited. The above session is full, so if you are interested in attending our next session, watch for our email announcement. It will also be posted on our website under Latest News.
The Networking Workgroup has recently developed the NNPN's very own on-line journal. The idea behind this project was to provide a place for NNPN members to post and publish any "grey" literature. This will give nurses a place to start, a way to get your information out, and then be able to cite your work. For new writers, it will be a good place to get your feet wet. For our first publication, Dr. Titler has submitted an article written with two other NNPN members, Laura Cullen and Kathleen Buckwalter.
Due to requests by numerous NNPN members, we will be adding an Implementation section to the website. We believe that in order to promote an EBP culture, it is essential to not only provide you with information regarding EBP but also provide you with information on the "how" of putting it into practice.
Thanks to the contributions by the VA Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, we have decided to add a section to the website focusing on the P I C O system. PICO stands for Population (or patient), Intervention, Comparison, and Outcomes. Becoming skilled in writing PICO statements is a must for developing efficient and comprehensive search strategies to retreive EBP articles on your topic of interest. This section is under development now. Stay tuned!
Take advantage and learn from projects contributed by other NNPN member organzations. See how others are incorporating EBP at their sites. Some examples include: • Quality Improvement in Long-Term Care Telephone Medicine •Journey To Publication: Dissemination of New Knowledge as a Professional Imperative • Back to Basics- a Multidisciplinary Approach to Decreasing Surgical Site Infections
NNPN members Johanna Soyebo, RN, MS, TNS and Socorro Vergeldedios, RN, CCRN-CMS from the Jesse Brown VAMC in Chicago, IL co-presented an oral presentation on Implementation of a Rapid Response Team at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics' 16th Annual EBP Conference. They won the Center for Research in the Implementation of Innovative Strategies in Practice (CRIISP) VA Award. Congratulations!
