The NNPN and the RWJ grant continue on as before without interruption. Dr. Titler can continue to be reached by contacting our offices here in Iowa City, as well her University of Michigan office.
Marita G. Titler, PhD, RN, FAAN
We would like to offer a warm welcome to our two new members of the Steering Committee: Sheila Cox Sullivan, PhD, RN, CNE and Beverly Priefer, PhD, RN. Dr. Sullivan is the Associate Chief Nurse of Research at the Central Arkansas Veterans' Healthcare System. Dr. Priefer is the Evidence-Based Practice/Research Manager and Magnet Coordinator for the William S. Middleton Memorial VA Hospital. We are excited to have these two exemplary women join our board.
We are now holding monthly sessions on different topics led by "experts" who also belong to the NNPN. Because not all members can attend the live sessions, we will record and post the sessions for viewing at your convenience.
Our upcoming session, to be held Tuesday, 12 Central time, April 7th, is presented by Jean Cody and Karen Coppin from Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. They will discuss the nursing drivers for and educational innovations in developing a successful Evidence-Based Practice Day, as well as describe the outcomes and significance of evidence-based practice day they held at their hospital.
Recordings currently available: February 3, 2009: Mr. Daniel J. O'Neal, EBP Specialist from NNPN site VA James A. Haley in Tampa, Florida led the second presentation. The topic was the Clinical Nurse Leader and its role in the new millenium.
December 2, 2008: Our first session is led by Dr. Marita Titler, director of the NNPN. She discusses the differences between Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), Conduct of Research, and Quality Improvement. The presentation is followed by a round of questions and answers. Please bear with us as this was our first attempt at a live recording and hence our apparent occasional incompetence.
This just in! Dr. Titler has volunteered to hold a bi-monthly interactive journal club for NNPN members through the University of Iowa's Elluminate! web-tool. During the 30 minute session, Dr. Titler will lead you through a selected article and critique. Watch our website for dates and times!
The Networking Workgroup has recently developed the NNPN's very own journal. The idea behind this project was to provide a place for NNPN members to post and publish any "grey" literature. This will give nurses a place to start, a way to get your information out, and then be able to cite your work. For new writers, it will be a good place to get your feet wet. For our first publication, Dr. Titler has submitted an article written with two other NNPN members, Laura Cullen and Kathleen Buckwalter.
Due to requests by numerous NNPN members, we have added a Policy and Procedure section to the website. We believe that in order to demonstrate the support of nursing administration and promote an EBP culture, it is essential that all nursing policies and procedures are evidence-based. The evidence base should be included on the policy itself. We have provided several examples of how to accomplish this. Additional readings are also provided. • Sample Policy and Procedure from UIHC • EBP Policy and Procedure Example Collaboration • EBP Policy and Procedure Day
Take advantage and learn from projects contributed by other NNPN member organzations. See how others are incorporating EBP at their sites. Some examples include: • Improving Mobility of Aging Patients Poster • Heart Failure Education Poster • Southwestern Vermont Medical Center's 2009 EBP Day
Looking for pictures!! The NNPN website is always in need of real life pictures of real life staff at work at our very own NNPN hospitals. We may even put you on the front page! If you have any pictures that you would like to submit, please send them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
We would like to remind you all of the 16th Annual National Evidence-Based Practice Conference, to be held on April 23rd & 24th, 2009 at the Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center in Iowa City, hosted by the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. We hope to see you there! SAVE THE DATE! SAVE THE DATE! SAVE THE DATE! SAVE THE DATE! 16th Annual National Evidence-Based Practice Conference:
